Frequently asked questions.
What is the minimum joining standard?
The minimum standard for members of the Skills Squad is that they are able to swim 100m as consecutive lengths (without pause or touching the bottom) in less than 2min45sec. We have plenty of members that choose to only swim front crawl and our coaches can help you learn all four strokes if you haven’t done these before.
The Competitive Squad is for swimmers who can complete a full training session of 2500m+ within 1hr.
Do I have to compete?
Not at all! While many of our members compete at local, regional, National and even International meets, we also have swimmers who are just here to improve fitness and technique. If you’ve never competed before but think it’s something you’d like to work up to, the club is here to support you as you work towards your goals.
Where do you train?
We have training sessions at the Ravelin Sports Centre at Portsmouth University, Gosport Leisure Centre and at Brune Park College.
Can I try a session before I decide to join?
Absolutely! All new members are provided a free taster session where they can meet the coach and other members. This gives you the chance to see if the club is right for you, and gives our Coach the opportunity to ensure you meet the minimum standard and that you’ll be in the right lane based on skill and speed if you do join.
I’ve never swum in a club setting before, how does it work?
Don’t worry, we have lots of members that never swam competitively, or in a club setting before. Don’t hesitate to ask the coach or other swimmers if there’s anything you’re not sure about.
I was a member of another club within the year, do I have to pay Swim England fees again?
No, you only have to pay Swim England Membership once per calendar year. The club you owe fees to is the one with whom you’ve had the longest unbroken membership. Only that club can change your membership category.
Do I have to be able to do all four strokes?
Not at all, you only need to be able to do front crawl. If you’re interested in learning any of the other strokes, tumble-turns or dives, you can do that with us!
